Dolphin Marine Magic

1st October 2014

We had been told by numerous people to visit the Dolphin & Seal show. It turns out it is a marine rescue organisation that has managed to earn their money by putting on public shows every day of the year. It turns out that they have also been filming a series called Blue Zoo that the kids have been watching on ABC Iview, so they actually "knew" half the staff and the names of animals such as some of the turtles. They were obviously pretty chuffed at that.
I was mildly disappointed at first that the so called interaction with Dolphins was no more than standing on the edge of a pool in the hope one swam close enough for us to touch.... which of course they never did.
They then opened up into a really clever and informative talk and some demonstrations with both the seals and dolphins, explaining the history of each of the animals and getting them to show off some of their incredible talents. They were very interactive by asking several people from the audience to join in with feeding or using toys with them and then finishing up with getting everyone to line up for a "kiss". This involved everyone lining up and leaning on the side of the pool, and then the dolphins would swim up and touch their snouts on our cheeks. The only drama with this was when they looked up and saw me and immediately jumped back into the water and swam away... hence no photo for me.....Apart from that, this was a pretty amazing experience and we ended up buying some amazing photos for an exorbitant cost, but well worth it.

We had a quiet afternoon as the kids had made some new friends on the playground. It was nice to have some quiet time to just read (and maybe drink a little). The wind had picked up and was blowing about 30-40km/hr by mid afternoon, but I went for a walk on the beach anyway... not sure what I was expecting, but the wind was blowing just as hard, if not more. The sand was swirling around everywhere and the waves were crashing in - but that is exactly what I love about the coast - watching nature at its best.
