Saying goodbye to Victoria isn't really that hard. The Great Ocean Road has been spectacular, but everywhere else has been a bit dry and dusty and so so. All the little towns we have stopped at have been great, but just seem to be lacking that pizzazz that northern NSW and all of QLD had.
Today we crossed the border into SA and headed into Mount Gambier. It was already well past playground time, but I was adamant that I was going to stop at the Umpherston Sinkhole to have a look. (As it turned out, there was a swing nearby so the kids managed to get their play time in....). I have climbed down this sinkhole numerous times previously, but I still find it fascinating and quite intriguing that there is this formation in the middle of the town, and potentially a whole lot of undiscovered others.
We then went to Little Blue Lake for lunch and stumbled upon a huge playground that the kids went wild on and set out to beat their personal best times for a Ninja Warrior course. After lunch we went to the famous Blue Lake and just happened to be here at the time of the year when it has changed from a dreary old grey colour to this most amazing blue... hopefully the pictures taken can project the true colour that we were seeing.
We only needed to travel another 30 minutes before arriving at Tantanoola, where we were free camping on a strip of grass between the dis-used rail track and the main road that carries about 4 cars an hour and the occasional truck that took a wrong turn somewhere. We were with 3 other campers and sharing a closed public toilet that we broke into seeing as it was only closed due to a car smashing into it and the walls being danger of collapsing.... nothing too serious that can get in the way of nature calling methinks.
