This morning was focused around the birthday girl - Tracy - and the kids excitement at helping her celebrate. Kayla had slept over with Colleen & Bob, so the boys had to be contained a bit until she arrived, but were soon able to fuss over their mum with some hand made cards and gifts they had bought ( Tyler had actually bought something 2 months ago at the local school fete and had it hidden in the van till now, which Tracy was super chuffed about).
We then all set out with Colleen to a nearby beach called Fingal Beach, which was just stunning, like all the coast line along here. There were, however, hundreds of dead stingers that had been washed up from the earlier high tide, but it seems they disappear completely on the outgoing tide, making it completely safe to paddle during outgoing / low tide.
Apart from the glorious beach, there was a walk up to a lookout, that was simply amazing. The whole formation of rock was old Lava rock that was originally in columns but had crumbled down in the raging seas, leaving an amazing scene of cliffs. Whilst there, we spotted a very large pod of dolphins swimming along, that then started to surf on the waves and do some amazing aerial stunts jumping out of the breakers and seeming to be putting on a show just for us.
The short stroll back along the beach provided the kids with some fun collecting some harmless clear "jellyfish", that they tried to save by collecting and throwing back into the pounding surf.... at least that was their intention.
After lunch, we once again were offered the opportunity of a child free night tonight, thanks to the ever generous Colleen & Bob, so we thought about it for a micro second and decided we would accept the offer and try really hard not to anguish about their well-being (yeah right...). Within an hour, we were cleaned up and headed into Coolangatta on our own, browsing through the shops and calling into the local clubs for a drink or two.... during which time it seemed that there was always a handful of Humpback whales breaching and splashing about as close as a few hundred metres off shore.
We then went to a local Thai restaurant that I had spotted a few days earlier, and had a glorious (but spicy hot in my case !) meal. We finished up with a great big double ice cream that neither of us needed but weren't going to miss out on, and strolled back to the car.
Feeling exhausted after such a big day, we set off for home, at which time we discovered it was only just 8pm!!! Man we are getting old quickly!
Was a great day..... it is just so tiring walking along beaches and dining out....
