We were supposed to be leaving this morning, but we had decided to extend for another night so we could go for a walk through the rain forest at Dorrigo NP. They have an amazing Skywalk viewing platform here as well the extends about 70m over the top of the trees below, some of which are probably 100m tall. More beautiful views that photos just don't give credit to. This walk was very different to others we have been on, as it started off extremely steep, with trees towering up and with girths up to 10m or more around. The ranger had advised the kids to stay on the track, as there were some stinging trees amongst the growth that would cause a reasonable amount of irritation if touched. Not sure if the photo shown below is one of those trees, but it was certainly nasty and needed a photo taken! The forest was also very dense, with heaps of palms as the undergrowth, but then the mountain side would be suddenly made up of broken lava rock rather than dirt and foliage, yet the massive trees and palms still managed to grow amongst them all.
The walk consisted of a well maintained trail that wound its way down to a couple of waterfalls, one of which had a trail running behind it under a massive rock overhang, which led to the rocky area at the bottom where we sat for a while and just soaked up the beauty.
They say it was a 6.6km round trip, but my phone registered it as 9.7km. I will go with any distance in between, but it took us 2 hours 40 minutes with a lot of areas with zero phone coverage so I don't really know. My feet were certainly feeling it by the time we had finished, but the kids were still running around in the park while we were having lunch..... obviously it didn't wear them out!.
The park had a free (sort of - gold coin donation) lamb & pork spit with snags for the kids. This of course gave us the opportunity to network with other fellow campers over more than a couple of drinks and get to know who is who - pity it was the night before we leave!
