This was our first stop at a country showgrounds and it was pretty damn good. This one does have a cost of $25 per night, but that is a flat entrance fee and doesnt matter how many people are in the van. We got power, maintained toilets and showers and at least 2 football oval sized areas of grass to spread out on for that fee.
This was our base for a couple of nights where we set out to explore the local gorge on the first day that involved a 4.2km mountain walk (which I must say the kids handled beautifully), and some spectacular views.
The next morning we set the alarm (Yeah I know... crazy...) for 6 am so we could get up to see some platypus at nearby Broken River. It seems the local wildlife knew what we doing, because about 5:45am there was what sounded like half a dozen kookaburras sitting on our caravan that set off a cackle loud enough to wake up any breathing person in the whole of FNQ!.
By the time we got to the location, it was almost 7am and I was resigned to the fact we had missed our opportunity, as it had been daylight for a good couple of hours now. Not so.... within a minute we spotted our first platypus and were treated to a half hour show of about 1/2 a dozen of the blighters popping their heads up to say hello and gulp a bit of air... pretty amazing stuff.
We had some brekky in the local park shortly afterwards, then set off for a walk through the National Park. Amazing walking through these forests - full of palms, ferns and some other ginormous trees,
Probably trekked about 5km today, which isn't really a lot, but when you consider Kayla's legs are only 50cm tall, she did an amazing job.
This afternoon, we went down to the creek which is about 10cm deep, but reasonably fast flowing, where the kids spent a good hour building a dam wall out of the rock bed, then we retired back to the van and did absolutely nothing for a few hours - bliss!
Tomorrow we are heading off to a free camp at a place called Yaamba, just short of Rockhampton. Ultimately, we are hoping to end up at Hervey Bay in a couple of days.... hopefully
